Lokah Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu: May all beings find inner peace
Interestingly, our first Maitri Tune is a beautiful prayer offering called Maitri Bhaav by Gurudev Chitrabhanuji. Written after a period of intense spiritual practice in silence as a monk, this song captured the hearts of the entire nation and beyond. Mukesh, a very popular Bollywood singer of the 1960's lent his voice for this beautiful song which is now a daily prayer in many schools and ashrams around the world. The four human values (Brahmaviharas) that this prayer seeks to cultivate in its listeners are: Amity (Maitri), Appreciation (Mudita), Compassion (Karuna) and Equanimity (Upeksha).
Amity (Maitri):
Maitri bhaav nu pavitra jharnu, mujh haiya ma vahya kare May the sacred stream of kindness, flow forever in my heart.
Shubh thavo aa sakala vishwa nu, evi bhavana nitya rahe May all beings flourish,This is my eternal wish.
Appreciation (Mudita):
Guna thi bharela gunijan dekhi, haiyu mharu nrutya kare May the sight of living virtue, move my heart to dance.
E santo na charana kamal maa, mujh jeevan nu ardhya rahe May my life be an offering, to their generosity.
Compassion (Karuna):
Deen kreur ne dharma vihona, dekhi dil maa dard rahe May the sight of pain and suffering, bring trembles to my heart.
karuna bheeni aankhon maa thi ashruno shubh stotra vahe May my eyes soft with compassion, rain tears of empathy.
Equanimity (Upeksha):
Marg bhulela jeevan pathikne, marg chindhva ubho rahu May I offer to show the way, for seekers who have lost their path.
kare upeksha e marag ni toye samata chitt dharu And if they ignore my offering, may I rest in equanimity.
Manavta ni dharma bhavana haiye sahu manav lave May the spirit of loving kindness, flow forever in our hearts.
ver jher na bhaav tajine mangal geeto e gaye May we purify our hearts from hatred, and sing in harmony.
