Kaavish: Neun La Leya

"Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence." ~Hazrat Sufi Inayat Ali Khan~

Sufism is actually a pun. In Sufism, they indirectly talk about the divine power while they talk about their beloved. Sheer romanticism as they say. Often they’ll start with describing how someone dear impressed them, stole their heart and then went away, and they’ll go onto deduce it to a realization of the fact that whatever they were searching was already deep within them (the idea of oneness) and that it was the journey that was essential for them to come at that point. And this whole is described in utterly romantic words that will take one for a roller coaster ride of emotions and finally settling for good.

Coke Studio is one such music show that has widely used Sufi poetry as lyrics in their songs. Here is a song that is performed by Kaavish – a musical band from Karachi, Pakistan. With melodious vocals of Jaffer Zaidi, nerve exciting poetry of Sufi Saint Shah Hussein, and a great arrangement with house band, this track will take you for a ride over the ecstatic waves of love, rhythm and harmony and will leave a subtle ‘suroor’ (hangover) that will keep you charged for a long time! Not a onetime listen, this is something you can’t have just once.

We all have once loved someone who was careless about it.

Lyrics and translation:

Nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

nyoon

Heart

nyoon la liya – haaye

I’ve given my heart – alas!

nyoon

Heart

nyoon la liya - 3

I’ve given my heart

be-parwaah de naal

To an uncaring beloved

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

os deen duni de shaah de naal - 2

To the sovereign of both this world and the next

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

nadyon paar raanjhan da thaana - 2

Far across the river is where my Ranjha lives

keeta kaul zaroori jaana - 2

I made a pledge and must go to him

mintaan karaan mallaah de naal - 2

I beg the boatman to take me there

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal - 2

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

os deen duni de shaah de naal - 2

To the sovereign of both this world and the next

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal - 2

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

kahe husain faqeer nimaana - 2

Shah Husain, the lowly beggar, says

dunya chhor aakhar mar jaana - 2

This world is temporary, we must die and leave it ultimately

aurak kam allaah de naal - 2

In the end, we are concerned with God alone

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

nyoon la liya – haaye - 5

I’ve given my heart – alas!

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

nyoon la liya

I’ve given my heart

nyoon la liya be-parwaah

…my heart to an uncaring beloved

nyoon la liya

I’ve given my heart

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal - 2

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved

os deen duni de shaah de naal - 2

To the sovereign of both this world and the next

nyoon la liya be-parwaah de naal - 3

I’ve given my heart to an uncaring beloved
