Tara Kini And Students: Mann Lago Yaar Fakiri Main

One of my most cherished memories I have of my mother is both of us singing "Mann lago yaar" on a road trip we took a few months before she passed away. As we drove down rain-soaked country roads singing our hearts out, we experienced the bliss of being fakirs in this ephemeral journey called life.

My mother passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness in January of 2010. On her birthday that year on September 4th, my family wished to clear out her cupboards and gift away all her belongings.

After going through all her cupboards and emptying them out, we moved on to the storeroom to continue the clearing out process. We found some beautiful objects there like old photos and childhood stuff, which evoked many memories, both happy and sad.

When we were almost done, we noticed just one large box sitting behind a cupboard. Though tired, we were also curious and wanting to get done with the clearing so we opened it. To our very pleasant surprise, inside was the most serene faced life sized statue of a sitting Buddha.

For the longest time, I have wished for a Buddha Statue in the Urban Ashram and knew it will come in the right time. When the statue came into our home is a mystery, and why it was never seen by anyone till that day is a greater mystery.

We placed it on an altar in our meditation room, and many of us have spent long periods of silence just soaking in the gentle presence emanating from the statue ever since.

I believe that the statue carries my mother's vibes and is alive, breathing and blessing all those who come home with peace.

"Lokah Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu"
May all beings be happy, be peaceful, be liberated

Lyrics and translation:

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Jo sukh pavo naam bhajan main
So sukh naahi amiri main
What joy I experience while singing the Name Divine, is not to be found in any riches or pleasures

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Bhala bura sabka suun lee je
Kar gujran garibi main
Listen to the appreciation and criticisms of everyone yet live your life in simplicity

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Prem nagar main rahni hamari
Bhali bani aayi saburi main
I stay in the land of love, and all good comes to me effortlessly as I wait in faith and patience

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Haath main kundi, bagal main sota
Chaaro disha jagiri hain
As I walk with my begging bowl and walking stick, I am a master of all I survey

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Aakhir tan yah khaakh milega
Kahat phirat magroori main
This physical body shall eventually return to the earth, then why walk around so pompously

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Kahat Kabira suno bhai sadho
Sahib mile saburi main
Says Kabir, listen o seeker, that the One is to found only in deep contemplation and patience

Mann lago mero yaar fakiri main
My heart is set on renunciation

Jo sukh pavo naam bhajan main
So sukh naahi amiri main
What joy I experience while singing the Name Divine, is not to be found in any riches or pleasures

This audio recording is a part of a 3 day workshop on exploring the mystic poetry of Kabir, Rumi, Nanak and others at Navdarshanam facilitated by Ananthu ji and Tara Kini. The workshop was offered purely in the spirit of gift and created a deeper longing for mystic poetry in the hearts of the 40 of us who were in attendance.
