Educators Retreat: Jan 13-15, 2017

What: a 3-day retreat, from January 13-15, to cultivate a deep dialogue around reinventing schools, revolutionizing education and rediscovering our values. In particular, we want to consider the unique challenges that technology poses for Millenials, the untapped transformation potential of the educators themselves, and the expansion of empathy to dissolve some of the polarized us-versus-them thinking in society.

Inspirations: Gandhi's notion of "hands, head, heart" education, Krishnamurti's work on Education and Significance of Life, Parker Palmer's work on "We Teach Who We Are", ServiceSpace conversations on Compassion Quotient, Daniel Goleman's work with Social-Emotional Learing, latest science behind cognitively based compassion training, and much more. :)

Who: this retreat is envisioned by life-long educator Vijayam Kartha, Nipun Mehta of ServiceSpace, Zarin Virji who was head of Universal High in Bombay and has held various educator circles, and Meghna Banker who is an heArtist and has been home-schooling her daughter. The event will include educators of all stripes, from school principals to artists, from teachers to technologists, from thought leaders to everyday heroes.

Vision: Instead of a one-time event, we see this as an ongoing movement -- a movement that continues well after our time together. Our hope for the 3 days is to build a community of deep ties, around our shared values. In that field, we're open to all that unfolds, but some ideas that have already emerged include drafting a "Charter for Happy Schools", building a "wiki" of actionable interventions, creating a website to openly share value-based curriculum from various contexts, hosting monthly video conferences that build on the thought leadership, and more. :)

Where: at a beautiful center in Ahmedabad, Gujarat (hosted by Moved by Love). Note: we've changed the location.

Costs: entire retreat is offered as a gift. Lodging and food costs are covered by past participants; its operations are managed entirely by volunteers. After the retreat, participants organically pay-forward however they are moved, and keep the ripple of generosity moving.

We're thankful for the inspiration of many such agenda-less gatherings held around the world.
