George Harrison: The Inner Light

Says Lao Tsu, "In the pursuit of learning, every day something is acquired. In the pursuit of Tao, every day something is dropped. Less and less is done until non-action is achieved. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone."

Our dear sister Saloni shares a personal story with her favorite song.

Four days before our home decor and artworks exhibition titled "KOAN", I got a message from a doctor friend and a fellow Iyengar yoga classmate and a with whom I have briefly touched upon a few spiritual topics a few times earlier.

He referred a soulful Beatles song called "The Inner Light" saying it's lyrics were like Koans, and I might like them.  He recommended it as an amazing piece of art - Indian musical instruments, philosophy of Tao and Western pop music.  He also suggested that we could have the music playing in the background during our exhibition and put up a display mentioning the Beatles and the Koans in the lyrics.

He is a very infrequent Whatsapp and his messaging me this song just at the eleenth hour struck me as serendipity. Immediately I looked it up, and heard it, and loved it! So I thanked him for referring it to me, and I have since re-read the lyrics of The Inner Light a few times again, as well as the original source of the lyrics - from the Tao Te Ching - which goes as follows

Without going out the door, you can know the world.  Without looking out the window, you can see heaven.  The farther you travel, the less you know.  Thus the wise person knows without traveling, understands without seeing, accomplishes without acting.

Every time I read it, it's inner light seems to shine through a wee bit brighter! It really is like a KOAN - worth holding and meditating upon!

And of course, we'll be putting it up in our exhibition too!! Thought of sharing this with my Maitri Tunes community.

Without going out of my door
I can know all things on Earth
Without looking out of my window
I could know the ways of Heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Without going out of your door
You can know all things on Earth
Without looking out of your window
You could know the ways of Heaven

The farther one travels
The less one knows
The less one really knows

Arrive without travelling
See all without looking
Do all without doing
