Kishore Kumar: Aa Chal Ke Tujhe

"Music is the greatest communication in the world. Even if people don't understand the language that you're singing in, they still know good music when they hear it." ~Lou Rawls~

Patrick, our regular contributor to the Maitri Tunes newsletter shares this personal account of what music means to him.

"There’s a certain song by the group ‘Camel’ which takes me right back in my memory to a field in Germany where I once walked in the early hours of the morning until it became light enough to see clearly.  I can almost hear the birdsong, sense the stillness of the day and the deep feeling of my insides where my heart felt fit to burst with the joy of being alive and very present!

Music has it’s very own special energy indeed.  Once enjoyed, it can remain with us for the rest of our lives, sending out ripples from its centre, from that moment when we first heard it long ago.  At first it has sound, its loudness, its quietness and then it is no longer heard, but buried within us, hidden only to surface again in another time another place and with it bring a new sense of joy, a new energy.  Which is a great analogy for the way our kindness ripples out unseen, at first full of action and energy, but then hidden from our view, yet surfacing to touch so many lives in the near and far future.

And yet there is another direction which music takes us, a direction into the present, in the now of our lives.  Music can take us on an adventure, to new places we’ve not yet been, new experiences we’d otherwise have missed, paths we would perhaps not have chosen."

Lyrics and Translation:

Aa chal ke tujhe, main le ke chalun ek aise gagan ke tale
Jahan gam bhi na ho, aansoo bhi na ho bas pyaar hi pyaar pale

O' come with me, I lead you on, under such a sky-
Where there are no woes, no tears either, just love and only love thrive.

Suraj ki pahali kiran se, aashaa kaa savera jaage
Chandaa kii kiran se dhul kar, ghanaghor andhera bhaage
Kabhi dhuup khile kabhi chhaav mile lambii sii dagar na khale

With first rays of sun, a new hope glees.
Rinsed with moon-rays pitch-dark flees
At times you get a scorching sun or shadows at times, the long tour never tires.

Jahan door nazar daudaye, aazaad gagan laharaye
Jahan rang birange panchhi, aashaa kaa sandesaa laayen
Sapano me pali hansati ho kali jahan shaam suhaani dhale

When staring to the far horizon, free sky hovers
Where colorful birds, bring the message of hopes.
Bred in such dreams, smiles a bud when the lovely dusk dive.

Sapano Ke aise jahan mein jahan pyaar hi pyaar khila ho
Hum jaa ke vahan kho jaaye shikuva na koyi ghila ho
Kahin bair na ho koyi gair na ho sab milke chalte chale

In such a dream world where only love blooms
Let's lose ourselves where there are no complains nor any qualms
There may not be any hate nor anyone is alien, let’s all walk in joy.
