Tochi Raina, Rekha Bhardwaj: Kabira Maan Ja

"I felt in need of a great pilgrimage, so I sat still for three days. And God came to me." ~Kabir~

In an African village, a westerner was travelling for an assignment with an local elder. Every few minutes the elder would stop to rest and chat with the other locals. The westerner was wondering why the need to pause so often given that the elder looked fit enough to keep walking

On being asked about this, the elder responded, my soul walks slower than my feet, and I need to pause to allow it to catch up.

Maybe that is why pilgrimages traditionally were slow and actually designed to help you keep arriving into the present moment with every step. A pilgrimage allows your soul and your soles to walk in synch, and in the process arrive at the destination in a wholesome way, rather than a hurried, scattered and disjointed manner.

Lyrics and translation:

Kaisee teri khudgarzee,
Na dhoop chune na chhaanv,
Kaisee teri khudgarzee,
Kisi thaur tike na paav.

Why this selfishness of yours,
That chooses neither Sun nor shade,
Why this selfishness of yours,
That your feet never rest!

Ban liya apnaa paighambar,
Tar liya tu saat samandar,
Phir bhi sookhaa mann ke andar,
Kyoon reh gaya…

You have become your own guide,
Journeyed over the seven seas,
Still, this thirst in your soul,
Why does it remain unquenched…

Re Kabira maan jaa,
Re Fakeera maan jaa,
Aa jaa tujh ko pukaaray teri parchhaaiyaan…
Re Kabira maan jaa.
Re Fakeera maan jaa,
Kaisa tu hai nirmohi kaisaa harjaiyaa…

O Kabira, listen to me,
O wanderer, believe me,
Come, your shadows are calling you…
O Kabira, listen to me,
O traveller, believe me..
Why are you so unattached & heartless…

Tooti chaarpaai wo hi,
Thandi purvaai rastaa dekhe,
Doodhon ki malaayi wohi,
Mitti ki suraahee rastaa dekhe…

That broken cot (at home),
The cool breeze awaits you,
That home-made butter,
and earthen pot of cool water awaits you..

Kaisi teri khudgarzi,
Lab namak rame naa misree,
Kaisi teri khudgarzi,
Tujhe preet purani bisri…
Mast Maula, Mast kalandar,
Tu hawa kaa ek bavandar,
Bujh ke yoon andar hi andar
Kyun reh gaya..

Why this selfishness of yours,
Neither salt nor sweet suit your tongue..
Why this selfishness of yours,
That you have forgotten love…
You are a free man, a free spirit,
Yet a stormy wind,
That is restless within you,
Why does it remain…

Re Kabira maan jaa,
Re Fakeera maan jaa,
Aa jaa tujh ko pukaaray teri parchhaaiyaan…
Re Kabira maan jaa.
Re Fakeera maan jaa,
Kaisa tu hai nirmohi kaisaa harjaiyaa…

O Kabira, listen to me,
O wanderer, believe me,
Come, your shadows are calling you…
O Kabira, listen to me,
O traveller, believe me..
Why are you so unattached & heartless…
