Plan And Execute Vs Search And Amplify

Last Saturday I had an interesting conversation with an old friend, who asked me the difference between plan-and-execute versus search-and-amplify. It felt like a great question to deep-dive into and landed up on a few interesting insights.

On the surface, those approaches look similar. But, in practice, search-and-amplify (SA) lens offers us something subtle -- intelligence of the whole. The fundamental difference is that the plan-and-execute (PE) approach is driven by the human mind, whereas the SA approach requires us to transcend the mind and be in the field of the unknown for goodness to emerge.

PE strategy is an outcome-oriented approach, where we are fixated on the desired end goal. It is implicitly biased towards a hierarchy of people, ideology or a belief system and that has a momentum of its own.

In PE modality, you do X to reach Y, but in SA mode, you do X to do X. The means and the ends are the same, or in other words, means are the end. Because there is no desire for any outcome nor a preference for a particular direction, it roots the whole process in emergence. That affords us intelligence of the whole.

Vimala Thakar speaks of 2 kinds of movements. One is a travel from point A to point B, and another is vibrational shift, without a predetermined direction. Both are movements but have vastly different implications.

I would love to hear different perspectives and uncover any blind spots I might have. Any thoughts? Am I missing something?

Great thoughts, Parag. People often understand this in a simplified way, by contrasting manufacturing and gardening. And the core question I ask is: how do we prepare ourselves to head towards an unknown destination? Especially in current times, it's quite clear where the current path is taking society and many people are unhappy with it and want an alternative destination. But that end point is unknown. So it's very relevant for all dis-satified folks to hold that question of heading towards an unknown destination. :) You can't do that with plan-and-execute mindset. Additionally, when pace of change is furiously fast, PE doesn't work. All tech companies born in the last decade or so, like Google, understand this (at the level of phenomena). That's why they give employees 20% time [...]

Wahh was smiling wide on reading you reflection Parag Bhai and Nipun Bhai. Just recently I was a witness to a conversation between Jayesh Bhai and a few folks from a privileged company dialoging around this and a lot more. Just wanted to share what Jayesh Bhai shared which completely resonates with your reflections

"when you are in an Impact mode, you are constantly in the manufacture mindset. But when you do gardening, there is an emergence.

When you create a field of 'network' then emerges 'reliability' which brings 'responsibility'. The change that we then seek is truly inner driven an long lasting :)"

@Nipun Bhai: This question "how do we prepare ourselves to head towards an unknown destination?" could totally have a longer blog through your reflections.

Loved the difference between a linear journey (A to B) and a vibrational journey. Will definitely be a thought I will be holding (and chewing on) for a while.

Hi Paragbhai! Some late reflections, but sharing nonetheless. :)

Some of the sharing during our call also had me thinking about how as ignorant beings, we do often have a desire for a specific outcome or some direction of travel, but how open we are to gladly accept the outcomes if they are not the one's we desire, is probably a reflection of how open we are to emergence.

What is seemingly 'emergence', is just a larger plan playing out, right? But it is perhaps our mode and the quality of our holding that allows us to accept/embrace at a personal level.

From the perspective of a collective, I loved the elaboration that - 'PE approach is driven by the human mind, whereas the SA approach requires us to transcend the mind and be in the field of the unknown for goodness to emerge.'
