Grandparents Love

Love is one of the most complicated emotions I have come across! It has many forms but still it has the same underlying feel to it. It’s interesting to see the effect it can have on different people - it can tie you into knots or it makes you feel so ecstatic you feel you are floating. it can make you feel so nervous you can’t take a single drop of water, or you may gorge on food and all the other happiness there is to devour around you! All this, the effect of a single emotion called love!

But what I want to talk about is the love of grandparents which I find so unique which compelled me to write this piece in the first place. We have become so absorbed in our materialistic world now-a-days that we often fail to even notice our grandparents in the house (it is with an effort after all that we give our parents some of our time!!) If you did bother to look in their direction even once amidst your hustle of daily life you would catch the loving glances they throw you hoping that this time you would notice them, say a word or two, share an anecdote. Theirs’ is a silent love which is so rich yet goes unnoticed! An unconditional love that can get overwhelming for us who are not so used to the honest and unabashed display of affection! Well after all we have no time for emotions, do we?

Everyone knows that memory starts failing you once age starts catching up with you. And this sure does get exasperating for us when our grandparents start forgetting things. But have you noticed how they remember the smallest things about you that you yourself have forgotten! Incidences of your childhood, your childhood mannerisms, they have an endless supply of anecdotes of your life. Their mind is like a diary of your life. What explains this? Why is it that they may forget the simplest of tasks but remember in vivid detail about your growing years still? It’s their love for you I guess which just imprints your memories into their minds which they just never forget. They may not remember as much about your mom or dad as much they remember about you! But then doesn’t love have strange manifestations!

One reason I came up with was that when they see their children grow they see themselves in their children but when they see their grandchildren grow they see their children in them. They get a reason and opportunity to revisit their younger days and show renewed vigour around us. A strength and energy we would have never guessed they possessed! The birth of a grandchild sure is one of the happiest days of their lives!

But as we grow up somehow unwittingly they tend to diminish in importance in our lives. It may not be done consciously but never the less it’s a fact. They may notice it but it does nothing to lessen their affection for us; in fact they take it in their stride trusting our good nature that we love them the same and they do feature in our thoughts! It was a small incident that forced me to give this thing a thought and the realization that I could lose them anytime suddenly along with the less time I gave them was quite overwhelming! I guess giving them some time out of our daily busy schedule would do wonders for them and will definitely give us a sense of well-being and yeah definitely a sense of having done a good deed for the day!

Thank you for sharing this, Pranit. It brought back lot of wonderful memories of the time I spent with my grand mother. Looking back, wish I had been more sensitive about her needs, was too young to realize her "silent affection" then.

Spending our "precious" time with our grandparents is our duty/responsibility, Not A Good Deed.
